In 1917 Florence and Royal moved to Harper County, Oklahoma to live with Royal's sister Ossie. Royal worked as foreman of a wheat farm. In 1923 the family moved to Holden, Missouri, then Warrensburg, Missouri for two years as Royal worked for the highway department.
